Bermuda is a small island, and very expensive. However, with the right planning, you can save serious money.
1) On arrival, be sure to have an address ready of where you are staying. Customs will hold you up big time if you do not. check Delta and American flight arrival times. try to schedule a flight that doesn't come in at the same time, as they will go through every piece of luggage and waste precious hours.
2) After exiting the small airport, you will see a cove-looking bus station across the street. Unless you are staying in St. George, wait for the 11 bus that says "Hamilton" on the front. Have 4 singles (US$) ready to put in the bus collection box. Wait for the last stop and get out at the bus depot. From here you can buy 1 or 3 day buss passes that allows you full access to all buses and ferries.
3) There are several bed and breakfasts along Harbor Rd that are way less expensive than the resorts. Book in advance, and you can get to these by taking the pink line ferry near the bus depot. They also sell bus/ferry passes at the ferry depot. They won't be right on a beach, but will have waterfront access.
4) You can walk around to beaches,, but I don't recommend it. The roads are narrow and have hardly any sidewalks, so cars have to drive in the other lane to pass you. Since the roads are windy, sometimes they don't see you till the last minute, and there could be oncoming traffic.
5) If you can brave it, rent a scooter. You'll be able to cover the whole island in a short period of time. Car rentals are not allowed on Bermuda, and each household can own one car. These restrictions keep congestion down. Cabs are expensive.
6) I stayed in Granaway Guest house and highly recommend it. There are other B&Bs along the same road.
