Day 2 in Bermuda, I had breakfast with a lovely couple from Manchester. I couldn't wait to introduce them to Mark, since their son is a Manchester Firefighter. They spoke of a fellow scuba diver staying there from Seattle, whom I was also excited to meet. (turns out Frank's also an All You Can Jetter!)
The kind innkeeper Francicso called and had the scooter company pick me up where I went to rent a scooter. Since I've never ridden a motor bike before, and my test run was very shakey, they were very concerned about letting me head all the way to the airport to pick up Mark. Being a woman alone didn't seem to help their confidence.
I will admit, when driving down the narrow roads 10K over the 35k speed limit and sill having every car pass me, I started to think this wasn't the best idea. Especially when the sky opened up and started pouring on me.
Mark was in customs for over an hour, so I hopped over to St. George and drove through the old town. Mark was shocked and terrified to see the scooter waiting for him, in the rain. After stopping by the scooter rental place to make sure they knew I survived (they actually clapped and cheered when I showed up with Mark on the back of the bike), we headed down to the other tip of the island, to Snorkle Beach.
The Dockyards are also on this end of the island, with many shops and restaurants. Snorkel Beach happened to be closed for a function, so we headed to the famous Horseshoe Bay. It was absolutely beautiful, pink sands, clear turquoise water, and wasn't too crowded. There was an Italian beach tennis tournament going on, and we cheered for the winner.
We ditched the scooter at night, and took the ferry into town where we caught a cab to the Swizzle Inn, home of the tourist favorite, Rum Swizzle, and Dark & Stormy, a potent mix of Bermuda's Black Seal Rum and Ginger Beer (a must try, but not for the faint of heart). Food is delicious and expensive, but it didn't break the bank.
The next morning we discovered 2 other All You Can Jetters at breakfast. We took our time getting packed and taking one last spin on the scooter before taking the 11 bus to the airport.
